British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
